Mission Focus for August 2021: Malawi

Our Mission Committee has chosen Malawi as for Mission Focus for August 2021. The Malawi flag will be displayed in our chancel for the entire month. Below is a description of some of our mission partnership and work in Malawi.

The Malawi Mission Fund was begun by Dr. Joseph Hopkins in 1988. However, in 1979, Joe and Lou Hopkins and their daughter Elaine moved to Malawi as PCUSA volunteers for 5 months. Joe taught at Zomba Theological Seminary and Lou taught music and recorded 100 unpublished hymns in Chichewa, a national language of Malawi.

Joe said that the poverty of the Malawi people moved him to establish the Malawi Mission Fund which responds to appeals for assistance from pastors and students. Since that time the Hopkins family, including grandchildren, have remained connected to the country. Alexandra Taylor Schroder will share a Minute of Mission this month on her connection with Malawi.

In 2013, Joe asked Sue Anne Fairman to administer the Fund which now serves up to 8 orphanages with school fees. One of the more popular ones (in our Valentines’ Alternative Gift program) is helping to provide chickens that feed the orphans and provide income for families. NWPC has been supporting the Malawi Mission Fund for many years.

Alexandra Taylor Schroder shared a Minute for Mission during worship Aug. 22 about her connection with Malawi. Watch her message here:
